ABOUT BIM
Typically it uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. The process produces the Building Information Model (also abbreviated BIM), which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components.
- The original premise of a CAD system was to automate the task of drafting. As such, the original focus of CAD applications was to represent 2D geometry via graphical elements, such as lines, arcs, symbols etc.
- BIM is moving away from the traditional lines and layers systems and replacing 2D symbols with building elements (objects), capable of representing and understanding the relationships of common building components.
- The advance from CAD to BIM is the shift from data to information.
- BIM is a process. The ideal BIM system would see all consultants working together on a single model, analysing and refining the computer model for real world performance.
- BIM focuses on improving the production process. By embedding databases and schedules within 3D models, BIM capable software such as Autodesk Revit is able to quickly translate the designer’s ideas into schedules, budgets and orders.
- When a 3D model is linked with building information, design firms have a faster, higher quality, richer design process.
- Risk is reduced, design intent is maintained, quality control is streamlined, communication is clearer and higher analytical tools are more accessible.
- Lower level tasks such as drafting, view co-ordination, document generation and schedule creation are automated.
- Once the model is created BIM capable software such as Autodesk Revit enables the various disciplines to analyse the structures real world performance over the building life cycle.
- This way the building is realised before it is constructed, issues are identified earlier, systems can be design in the most efficient way possible and above all increase productivity and improve quality.
