Revit is a 3D model integrated with a database of all components that make up a building. That is doors, windows, plumbing fixtures etc, basically any component that goes into constructing a building.
Revit can create a fully co-ordinated set of documents that dramatically reduces the possibility of errors in the documents. In a conventional CAD system none of the drawings are related to each other, meaning all changes need to be manually co-ordinated across the set. Revit automates this. In Revit all the information is linked together. Any change made in any view (whether it be a plan/schedule/elevations or 3D) is reflected instantly throughout the entire model.
Project visualisation is greatly increased by using Revit. It can offer the following:
